Anatomy:

  • Ciliated cuboidal or columnar epithelial cells lining ventricles and central canal.

  • Apical cilia move cerebrospinal fluid (CSF); microvilli absorb nutrients.

  • Form a single-layered epithelium, part of the ependyma.

Function:

  • Produce and circulate CSF (in choroid plexus).

  • Create a barrier between CSF and brain parenchyma.

  • Facilitate exchange of signaling molecules between CSF and brain tissue.

  • Serve as neural stem cells in certain regions (e.g., subventricular zone).
